Radiofrequency Ablation Procedures

Definition

Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure that may benefit patients who have not experienced significant pain relief using conventional methods. It is a safe and proven method to help mitigate symptoms from a number of chronic pain conditions including arthritis, neuropathic pain, conditions of the spine, and many more. It has shown to be a very successful procedure that helps up to 70% of patients who undergo the procedure. In fact, some patients experience pain relief for up to two years.

Procedure

Prior to having the radiofrequency ablation procedure at Tulsa Pain, our physicians ask that patients refrain from eating before coming in. Patients should also only have clear liquids to reduce the risk of complications during the procedure. Some medications may be permitted, but the physician will speak with the patient ahead of time to determine which medications should be discontinued.

Patients may be given an IV and given a local anesthesia in the area of the procedure, meaning the patient will be awake during the procedure and be able to communicate with the physician. Once the area is properly cleansed, the physician uses a fluoroscope to correctly place the needle. Once the needle has been inserted, the physician places an electrode through the needle and into the body. Radiofrequency waves are directed to the electrode to cause a heating sensation into the tissue. As a result, the nerve tissue is temporarily unable to send pain signals to the brain. Once the procedure is over, the Tulsa Pain team will monitor the patient during a brief recovery period, and then will be permitted to go home the same day.

After Care

After the patient arrives home, he or she should continue to watch for signs of infection or allergic reaction. The procedure is generally safe and has few complication risks, but it is possible to have a reaction to the dye used for the fluoroscope or medication, so if patients notice a reaction, they should call Tulsa Pain immediately. Patients should take at least 24 hours to rest and refrain from physical activity, including driving. The area may be slightly sore, so our physicians recommend icing the area or taking pain medication as needed.

The effects of the radiofrequency ablation may not take place until a few weeks following the procedure. Results may vary, but patients may experience pain relief between a few months to a couple years. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated.
