Because this condition primarily affects the outside of the ankle, the most common causes may include a sprain, fracture or ligament tear to the ankle that did not heal properly. If this is the case, patients may experience instability and weakness of the ankle, in addition to chronic pain. Other causes could include the development of scar tissue from a nerve, muscle or tendon injury.
The most common symptom of chronic ankle pain is long-lasting pain. Other symptoms of this condition generally include:
- Pain on the outer side of the ankle
- Pain while walking or participating in sports/physical activity
- Difficulty walking
- Ankle instability
- Swelling
- Stiffness
- Tenderness
- Warmth to the touch
Although painful, this condition can be mitigated with a number of minor, interventional and major treatment options. Treatment may include conservative therapies such as bracing, physical therapy, rest, ice or over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Interventional pain treatment may include a corticosteroid injection to reduce inflammation and pain. If these treatment options do not provide adequate pain relief, surgery may be required.
