Degenerative disc disease is a common cause of back and neck pain, especially as we age. It occurs when the discs that separate vertebrae in the spine begin to dry out and deteriorate.
When you’re young, the fluid-filled discs do a great job as shock absorbers, helping your back remain strong and flexible. As you age, the discs lose some of that fluid, which means they can’t absorb shocks as well and aren’t providing as much padding between your vertebrae. On top of that, normal wear and tear, and sometimes injuries, often cause small tears to develop in the discs’ outer walls.
Almost all adults over 60 appear to have some degeneration of the discs, according to studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They don’t all have back pain, however, so they are not considered to have degenerative disc disease.
People with degenerative disc disease often describe pain in their lower back or neck, depending on where the problem discs are located. Patients often say they feel better walking, rather than sitting, and that changing positions or lying down can help. The pain may be intermittent and may radiate to the low back, buttocks, or legs. Some patients may have weakness or tingling in their legs as well.
Treatment can take several forms. Your doctor will usually suggest you try rest, ice, and over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. A physical therapist can help you strengthen and stretch the muscles in your neck and back so they’re better able to support your spine
If your pain persists, other options may help, including steroid injections, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, prescription pain medication, and radiofrequency ablation.
Severe cases may require surgery, but most people are able to get relief without an operation.
