Overview:
- Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) is a minimally invasive procedure that combines electroacupuncture with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).
- This unique therapy uses needle electrodes placed around an area causing pain to stimulate peripheral sensory nerves in soft tissue.
- The pain management specialists at Tulsa Pain Consultants discuss the benefits of PENS for certain chronic pain conditions.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a treatment option for patients suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain. This therapy attaches low-voltage electrodes to a patient’s skin and delivers electrical impulses to the area causing pain. TENS may benefit those with muscle, joint or bone problems, as well as fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, tendinitis or bursitis.
Although TENS is an effective therapy for some, it may not work for everybody. That’s when percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) may be considered. Similar to TENS, PENS delivers low-voltage electrical currents to areas causing pain, but this treatment option uses needle electrodes inserted into the skin. This treatment option is usually reserved for patients who have not received adequate pain relief from TENS therapy.
During the procedure, the physician cleans and sanitizes the affected area. Unlike TENS, the physician will insert needle electrodes into the skin rather than placing a TENS electrode pad on top of the skin. Once the needles are in place and connected to the electrical stimulator, the device will be turned on and patients may experience muscle contractions.
Depending on the area being treated, PENS could take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes to complete, and patients may require additional treatments. Although the risk of complication is minimal, patients could experience increased pain, bruising or bleeding. If you are a PENS patient and are experiencing any of these symptoms, call Tulsa Pain Consultants right away. Pain relief from PENS may last a few weeks or months depending on the patient’s condition.
